Galleri Lofoten was founded on a simple conviction: that the paintings created in this part of Norway belong here. Many of the artists who travelled north during the Golden Age painted Henningsvær and the surrounding landscape, yet their work was often displayed far from the places that inspired it.
The gallery brought that work home. Over the years, the gallery has built one of Norway’s most significant collections of North Norwegian Golden Age painting, alongside a programme of contemporary exhibitions that continues to bring new artists into conversation with the landscape and tradition.
We are independent. We are rooted in this place. And we have been here long enough to know that many visitors find their way back.

OUR STORY
1989
THE LAST CATCH
The building that houses Galleri Lofoten began life as a fish landing station at the heart of Henningsvær’s fishing industry. As late as the winter of 1989, hundreds of thousands of kilos of cod were landed here, while large quantities of salted fish were stored inside. Later that year, the building’s working life as a fishery came to an end.
The gallery opens
Galleri Lofoten opened its doors in 1990, transforming the former fishing factory into a gallery. Where cod had been landed the year before, visitors now came to discover paintings.

A new chapter
Rasmussen Eiendom took over the gallery, bringing new investment and a long-term commitment to developing both the collection and the exhibition programme.
20,000 visitors
In 2025, Galleri Lofoten welcomed 20,000 visitors in a single year for the first time in its history. A milestone that speaks for the place, the collection and the people who have kept it alive.

Henningsvær: The kind of place people travel a long way to reach, and find difficult to leave.
Henningsvær is more than a destination. It’s a working fishing village with a thriving creative community, where galleries, workshops and cafés sit alongside the harbour and fishing boats. Connected by bridges across the islands of Lofoten, it’s a place where old traditions and new ideas comfortably exist side by side.
For centuries, the village has been shaped by the sea. During the winter cod season, the harbour is filled with fishing boats and thousands of fishermen, making Henningsvær one of the busiest fishing stations in Norway. That history is still part of everyday life, visible in the buildings, the quays and the rhythm of the village.
Galleri Lofoten is proud to be part of that story. A visit to the gallery is also an opportunity to explore Henningsvær, whether you’re wandering the harbour, discovering local makers, or simply spending time in one of Norway’s most distinctive coastal communities.
